You Already Have A Job

John 21 tells the story of how the disciples went fishing after the resurrection and saw Jesus again.  Most assessments of this story focus on Peter and the three commitments to Jesus to counter the three denials.

What I think is more interesting is that Jesus shows himself to be a better fisherman than these guys.  Here they are, despondent after their leader has died.  Regardless that he has shown themselves to him a couple of times already, they are thinking about what to do with their future.  There is obviously no future for them being disciples of Jesus, since he is gone and is only appearing to them. What will they do with their lives? How are they going to earn a living?

So they try to go back to the jobs that they knew.  A fair number of them were originally fishermen on the Sea of Galilee.  There are previous stories of Him gathering the disciples and calling them to become “Fishers of Men”.  Yet they seem to have forgotten this and are trying to return to their original homes and jobs.

To make it obvious that they are not doing what they are supposed to, Jesus out-does them at their own job.  They are masters at fishing, but he says something inane like “Put the net in on the other side of the boat”.  Yeah, like that’s going to work.  And it does.  Then they bring in these 153 fish, and contrary to their normal experience, the nets have no holes.  So, who is the better fisherman, Jesus or the experienced fishermen?

When he says come to the table and eat with me, he is not just saying, “have breakfast”.  He is saying that not only can I tell you where the fish are, but I can catch them faster than you and have them cooking for you to eat.  When I took you away from this job, it wasn’t for just while I was around, it was forever.  You signed up to be my disciples.  That job is yours now.  You can’t go back to your old jobs.  I don’t need you to do that anymore.  I need you to be my disciples.
